It's Just Like Riding a Bike

It's Just Like Riding a Bike
"IT'S JUST LIKE RIDING A BIKE" 30x15" by Nina Benedetto © 2010

When self-righteousness presents itself in my own life - out pops "mean 'ol Miss Gulch" from the classic Wizard of Oz movie - but this time in triplicate!

Sure, the little terrier nipped at her mean-spirited ankles and the law was clearly in her favor;  but, still - did she have to take Toto (Latin "everything") away from a young girl whose very name, Dorothy, means "gift from God"?

Our Miss Gulch's "natural" colors change to a gray value scale rendering and then to a reptilian monochromatic green as she bikes her way into assuming the persona of the Wicked Witch of the West!  Imbued in her rigid, cruel, and contemptuous face is the portrayal of the futility of seeking happiness by insisting on "justice" at the expense of another's deepest needs. The tornado arising right out of her hat attests to the storm that results from a pathological need to be "right" at any cost. This painting is a warning of the damage we risk if we don't recognize the "witch" potential inside ourselves.
